I was a traveler in uncharted territory, delving into a world both new and wonderful.

Never before have I dabbled into the world of photography nor have I been acquainted with the art of light painting, a term I’ve only become familiar with as of recent. But like a traveler on foreign land, I marveled at the possibilities previously undiscovered. And I wanted to express this sense of wonderment by exploring a subject that both baffles and fascinates, a subject of equal parts beauty and mystery --- magic. The first photograph is of a jar radiating soft purple light with and explosion of white streaming out from its opening, as if capturing the moment sparks of magic were released from their container. The second photograph is of a sphere of energy, resembling those conjured by witches and warlocks in fairytales. The final photograph is of a hand reaching out of the darkness, creating a burst of white light, as if releasing magic from its fingertips. The use of appropriation and juxtaposition can be found within the photographs, where familiar objects are used as a means of expression and are combined with dissimilar elements to create new meaning. For example, the hand and the empty jar are common images used as a means of creative expression by conveying new ideas when paired with light, an element not usually associated with either of the two images. The three photographs transport the viewer into a reality where the impossible is possible, a reality where magic exists in abundance. And as foreigners of this universe, the photographs instill a sense of awe by showcasing a world vastly different from our own.
